Mahakaleswar Shiva temple is located in the ancient city of Ujjain in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. Mahakaleswar is jyotirlingam and the most sacred abode. Hindus worship Lord Shiva in twelve sacred jyotirlingam shrines located in various locations of India. Pilgrims take holy baths in the river Shipra which is nearby Mahakaleswar Shiva temple. Any Shiva Lingam which derives currents of energy that is Shakthi is called Syambhu. This Jyotirlingam is a syambhu lingam.

- The last Monday of the Sawan period during the months of Shraavana or Bhadrapada is a very holy day and huge devotees participate in the Shahi Savaari procession.
- The different tradition unlike others is that the Prasad offered to the Mhakaleswar can be re-offered again in this temple.
